Lawmaker seeks review of 'stand your ground'
LANSING (AP) -- A lawmaker is asking for a review of Michigan's "stand your ground" law in the wake of Florida neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman's acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
Rep. Harvey Santana, a Detroit Democrat, says legislative hearings should be convened in Lansing. He says if changes are needed to Michigan law, the public and experts should have a say.
Michigan's self-defense law was passed in 2006 and signed by then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
Democrats introduced legislation last year to repeal the law after Martin's death, but it went nowhere.
A spokesman for Republican House Speaker Jase Bolger says legislators will continue to apply "common sense" so citizens can defend themselves. He says Santana is free to propose new legislation so it can go through the committee process.
