Man held in contempt for wearing hat in court

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) -- A Kent County judge has ordered a man to pay $100 or spend 10 days in jail for wearing a hat in court. The Grand Rapids Press says Ryan Cameron Lasenby was in Circuit Judge James Robert Redford's courtroom Monday for a friend's sentencing. When the judge announced the hearing was adjourned, Lasenby started to place a baseball cap on his head. Redford reminded him hats aren't allowed in the courtroom. Lasenby put the hat on a few steps away from the hallway. Redford told Lasenby to stop, then informed the 29-year-old he was being held in contempt. Lasenby said he "didn't mean to disrespect the court" and asked: "Ten days in jail for wearing a hat?" He has three days to pay the $100 or go to jail. Published: Fri, Nov 8, 2013
