No excuses: Judge wants 625-pound man in court

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) - A western Michigan judge is losing his patience with a man who says he weighs 625 pounds and can't get to court. Jeffery Klein is charged with making a false bomb threat at a mobile home park in Kent County in 2012. He's missed many court hearings over the past two years and, in a letter, told a Kent County judge that he can't leave his Grand Rapids home because of his size. The Grand Rapids Press says Judge Dennis Leiber told attorneys last Friday that Klein must come to court as soon as possible. Defense lawyer Damian Nunzio says he's never seen his 44-year-old client walk. He believes Klein would need an ambulance and then be placed on a freight elevator to get to the courthouse's 10th floor. Published: Tue, Aug 05, 2014
