Jury convicts man in death of student from Iran

HOUGHTON (AP) - A jury has convicted a man of second-degree murder in the death of his wife who moved from Iran to pursue an advanced degree at Michigan Technological University. Nima Nassiri testified in his own defense, admitting that he repeatedly struck Sanaz Nezami but didn't intend to kill her. A Houghton County jury convicted Nassiri on Wednesday, the third day of trial. The 27-year-old Nezami died of head injuries in December. Her heart, lungs and other organs were transplanted to seven people. Marquette General Hospital communicated with relatives in Iran over online video after putting Nezami's name into a Google search. She was buried in a Marquette cemetery. Nassiri and Nezami met over the Internet and got married last year in Turkey. He's from the Los Angeles area. Published: Fri, Sep 19, 2014
