Lawsuit alleges officers conducted illegal pot raid

DETROIT (AP) — A Warren couple has filed a federal lawsuit against the Detroit Police Department and the officers involved in a raid of their in-home marijuana operation.

The lawsuit says the officers barged into the couple’s Warren home on Dec. 28, 2013, and stole 50 legal marijuana plants. Timothy and Hatema Davis claim six plain-clothes officers, who were wearing masks and armed with rifles, kicked in their front door, stormed into their home without a search warrant and handcuffed them.

The complaint states the couple eventually was released and wasn’t charged.

The lawsuit accuses officers within the since-disbanded narcotics unit of conducting numerous illegal searches and seizures at other legal marijuana facilities throughout the Detroit area.

A police department spokeswoman says she cannot comment on pending litigation.
