The law firm of Brooks Kushman hosted an event on March 21 for Girl Scouts in the Heart of Michigan Troop to earn their IP Patch.

During the event at the Ypsilanti Ann Arbor Regional Center, six Brooks Kushman attorneys spoke about the IP tools inventors can use to protect their innovations while sharing them with others.

“We are proud to offer the first opportunity for Girl Scouts to earn their IP Patch in Michigan,” said Brooks Kushman Shareholder Libby Janda, chair of the firm’s Trademark practice, who manages trademark matters in a variety of industries, including automotive, retail, restaurant and food,
advertising and marketing, insurance, consumer products and financial services. “These events offer valuable lessons for girls about the career opportunities available to them in intellectual property law and other STEM industries.”

The IP Patch is available to four levels of Girl Scouts (Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior). It was created by the Girl Scouts as a supplement to the Innovation badge series with the help of industry partners like the Intellectual Property Owners Educational Foundation and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

As Girl Scouts earn each of the four levels of the IP Patch, they will learn how to think like an inventor, how inventions can improve lives, how to think like an entrepreneur and how to identify and develop solutions for social problems.

In addition to Janda, Brooks Kushman presenters were Shareholder Kristin Murphy, an adjunct professor at Michigan State University School of Law and who prior to her law career was a project engineer for a manufacturing company; senior attorney Jennifer Ziegler who specializes in global brand protection, trademark and copyright enforcement, anti-counterfeiting, and trademark portfolio management and who previously was associate general counsel, Trademarks for a major motorcycle manufacturer; associates Rebecca Cantor, a Michigan Law grad; and Rachel Smith, a Wayne Law grad; and law clerk Lauren Rennert.

All the Brooks Kushman presenters are former Girl Scouts, and Janda has previously served on the Heart of Michigan Board of Trustees.

Brooks Kushman will hold four additional IP Patch events throughout the 2015-16 Girl Scout calendar year. Girl Scouts of each level will have the chance to earn the IP Patch by attending one of these events.
