Settlement upholds academic dishonesty against GVSU students

ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) - Findings of academic dishonesty are being upheld against two former Grand Valley State University students as part of a lawsuit settlement.

Erin Jurek and Ashley Short sued the school in May, saying that they were falsely convicted of academic dishonesty and that a math professor discriminated against them based on their gender. Officials accused the two women of working together on a take-home math exam through an unapproved Internet message board.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the settlement agreement says Grand Valley will not disclose the convictions against Jurek and Short unless "compelled to do so by process of the law." The federal lawsuit said the dishonesty findings hurt the women's current and future employment ability, among other ways.

The school and students did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

Jurek and Short have graduated from Grand Valley.
