Law school to present Alumni Achievement Award

Judge Anthony J. Fiorella Jr. of New York, a’61 and ’66 graduate of University of Detroit Mercy, will be honored at the 2nd annual Spirit of UDM: Alumni Achievement Awards at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17, in the University’s Student Center Ballroom. The event honors distinguished alumni from each college and school with an Alumni Achievement Award.

A distinguished and highly respected jurist, Fiorella served as a judge of the Housing Court in the Civil Court of the City of New York from 1988 until his retirement in 2013. Recognized for his notable decisions in a wide variety of civil cases concerning landlord and tenant issues, he is a strong advocate for the establishment and maintenance of housing standards. More than 85 of his judicial decisions have been published in the New York Law Journal.

After graduation from Fordham Preparatory School, a Jesuit college prep school in New York City, Fiorella attended University of Detroit on a football scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in political science in 1961. He then served two years in the U.S. Army before returning to University of Detroit Law School, where he earned his law degree in 1966. He went on to earn a post-graduate law degree (LL.M.) from New York University School of Law in 1978.

Fiorella worked in the private sector of the legal field until 1975 when he joined the Civil Court of the City of New York as a law secretary to two judges. Six years later, he was promoted to chief of the Law Department, a position he held until his appointment in 1988 to judge of the Housing Court.

Honored for his integrity, intelligence, fairness and commitment to Jesuit education and his Italian heredity, Fiorella has received a Judiciary Award of Merit, the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Kings County Appreciation Award and the Italian American Columbus Alliance Award. He is currently a member of the UDM School of Law Alumni Board.

The Spirit of UDM: Alumni Achievement Award was established to recognize the university’s distinguished graduates, from each of its colleges and schools, who have excelled in their chosen profession, demonstrated outstanding leadership in their work, and benefited the wider community through their support. Award recipients reflect the university’s mission of excellence and service and bring pride to their alma mater.
