Attorney's golf outing to benefit diabetes research

The seventh annual “Swing to Cure” Diabetes Golf Outing to benefit the Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center and JDRF – Metro Detroit/Michigan Chapter will take place on Monday, May 18, at the University of Michigan Golf Course.

The outing includes 18 holes of golf, a boxed lunch on the course, dinner following golf, a live and silent auction, and photo opportunities with University of Michigan football celebrities. Current and former Wolverines are expected to participate in the event.

Swing to Cure Diabetes was founded by former University of Michigan football player and Varnum attorney Rich Hewlett and his late wife, Chris. The couple has been involved in raising money and awareness for juvenile diabetes research since their oldest son, Jeffrey, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age four.  Several years ago, they decided to try a golf event capitalizing on the family’s strong ties to the University of Michigan. The response was overwhelming. To date the event has raised more than $370,000 for diabetes research. Jeff is now a junior at Michigan and will serve as co-host of this year’s event.

Asked why he thinks the event has been so successful, Hewlett answered: “This event began with the overwhelming support of our family, friends, colleagues and clients. The event is unique in that it brings together not only the golfers and sponsors who are raising money for the research, but even the researchers themselves, the representatives of the research organizations, and beneficiaries of the research like my son Jeff.

“For me personally, the event still has the same close feel that it did when Chris and I first started it and I think people truly enjoy that aspect of it,” Hewlett said.

Over the years, the event has featured the Michigan football head coaches, including Brady Hoke, Lloyd Carr, and Gary Moeller. The late Bo Schembechler and his wife Cathy also have supported and participated in the Hewlett family and JDRF fundraising activities over the years.  Many of Hewlett’s former Michigan teammates are also involved each year.

Spots are limited to 140 golfers, but there are numerous sponsorship opportunities available as well.  For additional information about how to play, sponsor or register, visit www.swingtocurediabetes.com. Varnum Law and Conway MacKenzie are the lead sponsors of this year’s Swing to Cure Diabetes event.
