Judicial Externship Program

On Saturday, May 9, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Career and Professional Development Office hosted and organized the 2015 Judicial Externship Program orientation, at the school’s Auburn Hills campus. The training prepared students for their summer judicial externships with judges from the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan.  In addition to the two WMU-Cooley students, April McKie (judicial extern to U.S. District Court Judge Matthew F. Leitman, Eastern District of Michigan) and Monique Merritt (U.S. District Court Judge Linda V. Parker, Eastern District of Michigan), 25 law students from nine different law schools attended the training. The represented schools included WMU-Cooley Law, University of Michigan Law School, Wayne State University Law School, University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Boston College Law School, DePaul University College of Law, and Seattle University School of Law. In addition, three participants from Chicago, Seattle, and Boston participated in the training by teleconference.  Presenters covered topics such as professionalism and ethics, work schedules and assignments, basic analysis of litigation conducted in federal courts, and legal research and writing. The training included discussions with U.S. District Court Judge Victoria A. Roberts (front row, center), Eastern District of Michigan; Sharika Robinson, judicial clerk to U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Damon J. Keith, Sixth Circuit;  Earl A. Kirkland III, judicial clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Linda V. Parker, Eastern District of Michigan; Sasha Griffin, judicial clerk to Roberts; Theodore Takougang, judicial clerk to U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Eric Clay, Sixth Circuit; and Michael Bird, WMU-Cooley reference librarian.
