School awards public interest law fellowships

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law has awarded three fellowships for law students to serve during the summer months in areas of public service. The fellowships were funded through two successful events:  the 12th annual Voice for Justice Auction held on April 11 at the Stroh River Place Atrium along the Detroit riverfront; and the 5K Race for Justice held on March 29 along the Windsor Riverwalk.  The events generated $50,000 through live and silent auctions, sponsorships, and ticket sales.

This year’s recipients of the Voice for Justice Public Interest Law Fellowships are:
• Jessica R. Cheaib who will intern with the Misdemeanor Defenders Office in Detroit.
• Edward F. Martell who will work as a law clerk with the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia.
• Lauren C. Rose who will work with the Detroit Center for Family Advocacy.

These three students continue the tradition of service established by 98 students who received fellowships from 2003 through 2014 who worked at nonprofit organizations locally and throughout the world, such as Freedom House, Salvation Army William J. Booth Legal Clinic, Chaldean Federation of America, African Women’s Lawyer’s Association in Ghana, State Appellate Defender Office, American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence, Michigan Children’s Law Center, Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and the Unitarian Universalist Office in the United Nations.

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law strives to teach students to be both skilled practitioners and compassionate professionals.  The Voice for Justice Public Interest Law Fellowships expand the school’s longstanding history of service to the community and provide students the opportunity to succeed while making a difference in the community.
