'Corporate Counsel as Gatekeepers' set for October 16

This year’s Wayne Law Review Symposium will bring together a former associate U.S. attorney general, corporate counsel and academic experts on Friday, Oct. 16, to discuss “Corporate Counsel as Gatekeepers.”

Tony West, former associate U.S. attorney general and executive vice president of government affairs, general counsel and corporate secretary of PepsiCo, will deliver the keynote address.

The symposium will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at Wayne State University Law School, 471 W. Palmer St.

The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available for $7 (credit and debit cards only) in Structure No. 1 across West Palmer Street from the law school. The event includes a continental breakfast, lunch and a cocktail and networking reception. Register at law.wayne.edu/lawreview2015 by Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The Wayne Law Review Symposium is made possible through the support of the Cohn Family Endowed Fund. This year’s event is co-sponsored by the Association of Corporate Counsel Michigan.

Today’s corporate lawyer – working in-house or at an outside firm – is increasingly viewed as someone charged with more than just protecting their employer or client. This year’s symposium examines the evolving role of corporate lawyers as “gatekeepers” responsible for enhancing the integrity of the organization by deterring wrongdoing and, if necessary, revealing it to the appropriate regulators and prosecutors.

Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson; Dennis Lienhardt, editor-in-chief of Wayne Law Review; and U.S. District Court Judge Avern Cohn, Eastern District of Michigan, will deliver opening remarks at 9 a.m.

At 9:15 a.m., former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law and distinguished legislator in residence at the law school, will introduce West.
