Repairs planned to pedestrian plaza over Interstate 696

OAK PARK (AP) - Officials say significant repairs are planned starting this week to a pedestrian plaza over Interstate 696 in suburban Detroit.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says Church Street over I-696 in Oak Park is scheduled to close today for work that's expected to last until the late fall. Minor repairs also are planned on plazas in Oak Park and Southfield.

Temporary pedestrian routes will be established along with vehicle detours. Work includes new drainage, substructure and superstructure repairs, sidewalks, pavement and landscaping.

The construction is expected to primarily affect pedestrians, with minor sidewalk closures on the Southfield plaza and temporary closures of the entire east plaza in Oak Park. MDOT says it will stage the work to limit the impact on pedestrians and maintain pedestrian access.
