Ex-state police sergeant gets $350,000 in case over harassment

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) - A federal jury has awarded $350,000 to a former state police sergeant who said she suffered retaliation for reporting sexual harassment.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the jury reached its verdict last Thursday in the case of Linda Mys, a retired state police trooper who sued six years ago. She joined the state police in 1987 and took early retirement in 2010.

Mys says she was punished by being assigned to the Detroit post, far from her Sand Lake home, after she accused a colleague of sexual harassment. Collin Nyeholt, one of the lawyers representing Mys, says the verdict "was a real vindication for our client."

The Michigan State Police said in a statement that the agency is disappointed with the jury's decision and denies the allegations in the case.
