Time and Talent Award to be presented at Detroit Mercy Law golf outing

The University of Detroit Mercy Law Alumni Association will present the 2016 Time and Talent Award to Mark A. Wisniewski, class of 1990, on September 30, 2016. The Time and Talent Award is the School of Law’s most prestigious honor. The Board of Directors of the Alumni Association established the award in 2002 to honor those who have given their time and talent to the School through their distinguished leadership and longstanding service. The award will be presented at a special dinner following the school’s Homecoming Golf Outing at The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth on Friday, Sept. 30.

Wisniewski has been a constant champion and distinguished ambassador for Detroit Mercy Law for more than 25 years. He has served on the Board of Directors of its Alumni Association for ten years, including two terms as president (2013-2015). He has taught Trial Practice as an adjunct professor, served on countless committees, attended all alumni events, and accepted every request for assistance, all while maintaining a thriving litigation practice at Kitch, Drutchas, Wagner, Valitutti, & Sherbrook PC.

Phyllis L. Crocker, dean of Detroit Mercy Law, praised Wisniewski’s service to the law school and the profession:  “This award is the perfect way to thank Mark for his stellar and inspiring service to Detroit Mercy Law and to our graduates. We are grateful for his dedication, his time, and his belief in the education we provide:  one that produces exceptional lawyers – like Mark – who serve their clients and their communities.”

Commenting on the award, Wisniewski’s classmate and longtime friend Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Michael J. Riordan stated, “I met Mark on our first day of classes at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and our friendship has lasted to this day. He truly lives his life as a person for others and is known far and wide for his legal talent, his ethics, and his kind heart. Mark’s loyalty to the mission of Detroit Mercy Law is an example to us all. I consider it a privilege to know Mark and to call him a dear friend.”

Edward Lennon, president of the Alumni Association, echoed Riordan’s comments, saying, “In addition to his numerous professional, philanthropic, and personal accomplishments, Mark has been an extremely valuable asset to the law school since his graduation. He has contributed tirelessly to all aspects of Detroit Mercy Law, and his standing in the legal community serves as a model and inspiration for the law students of today and in the future.”

Wisniewski has been an attorney with the Kitch law firm since he graduated from Detroit Mercy Law in 1990 and has served as its Chairman and CEO since 2014. It is one of the largest law firms in southeastern Michigan and is headquartered in the heart of Detroit. In addition to his management responsibilities, he also leads the firm’s asbestos liability and mass tort defense practice groups.

During his time as a law student, Wisniewski was associate editor of the Law Review and served on the Student Bar Association Executive Board. He earned an A.B. in Political Science and American History from the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of De La Salle Collegiate, an all-boys Catholic high school located in Warren and was honored as its alumnus of the year in 2013.
