On January 11, at the first meeting of the 2017 Oakland County Board of Commissioners, Chairman Michael J. Gingell and Vice Chairman Michael Spisz were re-elected to their leadership positions by their fellow board members with strong bi-partisan support. Gingell is now serving his fourth consecutive term as chairman, making him the longest continually serving chairman in the history of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. This will be Spisz’s second term as vice chairman.

“I am honored to be elected as the chairman of the Board of Commissioners and the head of the legislative branch of Oakland County government. I look forward to working with the other commissioners to provide the services that are needed, increase economic development, maintain our financial stability and to continue to make Oakland County a great place to live and work,” stated Gingell.

Gingell was first elected to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners in 2006 and has served as chairman since 2011. He is a Republican and represents the 1st District, which includes the City of Lake Angelus, portions of the City of Auburn Hills, and portions of Independence Township, as well as Orion Township and the Village of Lake Orion.

“I am honored and thankful to again be able to serve with my colleagues as vice chair of the Board of Commissioners,” said Spisz. “I will continue to work hard, on behalf of my constituents and all Oakland County residents, to ensure that Oakland County remains one of the best in the country.”

Spisz was first elected to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners in 2012 and has served as vice chair since December 2015. He represents the 3rd District, which includes the Townships of Addison, Brandon, Oakland, and Oxford, as well as the Villages of Ortonville, Leonard, and Oxford.

In addition, Spisz was recently appointed vice chair of the the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) Transportation Coordinating Council (TCC). Spisz was appointed by SEMCOG Chair and Superior Township Supervisor Rodrick Green. Spisz has served on TCC since July 2016.

“I am honored to have been appointed to the position of vice chair for the Transportation Coordinating Council of SEMCOG and look forward to working with my colleagues on the issues and challenges before us,” Spisz said. “I am a strong proponent of having safe, efficient pathways throughout our communities and have supported avenues to expand them since first coming to public office in 2008. I am excited to have the opportunity to work on this important issue in my new capacity on the council.”

The SEMCOG TCC works to develop and implement the Long-Range Transportation Plan. This includes monitoring the plan through the Transportation Improvement Program and recommending transportation projects and amendments. The council is made up of a diverse set of stakeholders, including those with expertise in local economic development, the environment, workforce development and education. Its goals are to align planning initiatives, improve project coordination and enhance regional performance measures.
