The law firm of Curtis, Curtis, and Brelinski PC traces its roots back to 1901, when former Jackson County Probate Court Judge George H. Curtis opened his law practice in the Dwight Building in downtown Jackson. His son, Robert N. Curtis, later joined his father’s law practice, and in 1970 Robert’s son, Philip J. Curtis, came on board as well.

Robert’s brother, Philip Campbell Curtis, born May 26, 1907 in Jackson, received a B.A. from Albion College where he had his first contact with painting. After a year at the University of Michigan Law School, he changed course and enrolled at Yale University School of Art, and then had a long and successful career, first as an arts administrator, and then as an artist.

Philip C. Curtis was a painter frequently classified as an American Surrealist or Magic Realist. In 1981, a permanent exhibit of his work opened at the Phoenix Art Museum, and in 2001, the Ullman Center for the Art of Philip C. Curtis opened there, honoring his work and legacy. His meticulously crafted, charmingly enigmatic paintings also can be found at the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Art, and in private collections around the world.

An exhibit—“Philip C. Curtis Coming Home”—can be seen through March 12 at the Ganton Art Gallery at Spring Arbor University, 106 E Main, Spring Arbor. The exhibit features 49 works from the Philip C. Curtis Trust and private collections. It includes interactive stations, a family art guide created by the Jackson School of the Arts, and the PBS documentary on the life and art of Philip C. Curtis.

The free exhibit is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends.
