Deputy county executive selected for CIO hall of fame

Deputy Oakland County Executive & Chief Information Officer  Phil Bertolini is among the newest members of the CIO Hall of Fame. Judges for the digital magazine CIO chose inductees based on their career achievement, reputation, and demonstrated business leadership. CIO will feature Bertolini and 19 others from its 2017 Hall of Fame class in its July/August issue.

“It’s no accident that Oakland County is nationally recognized as one of the most digitally advanced counties in the country,” County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said. “It’s because of Phil Bertolini’s excellence and unwavering commitment to innovation.”

Bertolini’s CIO Hall of Fame induction comes on the heels of the Michigan Digital Government Summit naming him Michigan’s IT Leader of the Year last October.

“Getting a nod from my CIO peers that I’ve had a significant impact on the profession means a lot to me,” Bertolini said. “But at the end of the day, my job is about working with a team that provides innovation and collaboration for Oakland County to improve customer service. That is where I get my drive.”

Previous honors for Bertolini include:

• Crain’s Detroit Business CIO of the Year for 2013.
• White House Champion of Change in 2012.
• “Top 25, Doers, Dreamers and Drivers” by Government Technology Magazine in 2007 with County Executive Patterson.
• CIO of the Year in 2004 from Automation Alley.

Among Bertolini’s greatest IT achievements is leading the push for Oakland County to collaborate with other governments in the cloud. Under his leadership and with the support of Patterson, the county launched G2G Cloud Solutions (G2Gcloud.com) to improve government services by sharing technology with other government agencies at little or no cost, therefore reducing the cost of government. The county also developed G2G Marketplace (G2Gmarket.com) to offer solutions from government partners and approved vendors to government agencies through an online store experience.

The Center for Digital Government consistently ranks Oakland County among the most digitally-advanced counties in America. The National Association of Counties also bestows numerous achievement awards on Oakland County’s Department of Information Technology annually, all under Bertolini’s direction.

This is the largest CIO Hall of Fame class since its inception in 1997. Hall of Fame alumni chose the class of 2017. CIO will hold its hall of fame induction ceremony and gala dinner at the CIO 100 Symposium on Aug. 16, at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“Having 20 new Hall of Famers for the 20th anniversary is quite a delightful coincidence, but on a deeper level, I believe it represents the increasingly impressive career paths that CIOs are forging at the most strategic levels of business today,” said Maryfran Johnson, editor-in-chief of CIO Events.

Bertolini has served as deputy county executive and CIO since January of 2005. He joined the county in 1988, rising to director of IT in 2001. His personal mission statement says that he wants “to provide innovative practical leadership that empowers the team to responsibly deliver the highest quality technology services that afford maximum benefit to the organization.”

Bertolini earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in telecommunication from Michigan State University in 1985.

Serving CIOs, other IT leaders, as well as the ecosystem that surrounds and interacts with them, CIO.com, CIO Executive Programs, CIO Strategic Marketing Services and CIO magazine are produced by CXO Media, an award-winning business unit of IDG Enterprise. Starting in 1987, CIO’s portfolio of properties has grown to provide technology and business leaders with insight and analysis on information technology trends and a keen understanding of IT’s role in achieving business goals.
