Attorney to present four Pontiac teachers with $2,000 awards

The Pontiac School District will host this year’s teacher-student achievement recognition event on May 18.

The Academic Achievement Awards is a recognition banquet that champions the academic and behavioral successes of Pontiac School District students. This will be the District’s first year holding the event and the aim is to spotlight the progress it is making despite budget deficits and lack of parity in education for the city.

PSD teachers Sonia Nieske, Gregory Spencer, Elizabeth Voultos, and Shayla Scott will be recognized with the June Fieger Teacher Incentive Award for innovation and professional excellence. The district-wide award – presented by the Pontiac Alumni Foundation and its chairman, retired Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Fred Mester – honors teachers who have made exceptional and longstanding contributions to students.  More than 150 students who have consistently earned a position on the honor roll and have perfect attendance also will also be recognized.

Special guests will include attorney Geoffrey Fieger, Detroit Pistons announcer and 105.9 KissFM radio personality John Mason, and the Claflin University Concert Choir of South Carolina, with Dr. Isaiah McGee, Music Department chair.

The event will be held this Thursday, May 18, at 6 p.m. at the Woodside Pontiac Dream Center, 830 Auburn Ave., Pontiac.

Sponsors include Fieger Law Office, General Motors, Pontiac Alumni Foundation, Woodside Bible-Pontiac Dream Center, Chartwells, Unique Catering, Benson Street Bakery, and the Pontiac Board of Education.
