FERNDALE (AP) — An Oakland County sheriff’s deputy whose shooting death remains unsolved 100 years later was remembered during a memorial service.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and Ferndale police remembered Deputy Albert Anderson of Ferndale on Saturday. He was on his way home from a shift on Aug. 12, 1917 when he stopped to check on a suspicious person. The Detroit News reports that the suspect had stolen $3.80 in pennies from a store and broke free and ran from Anderson. The suspect fired a single shot with a .38-caliber bullet striking Anderson in the abdomen when Anderson chased after him. Anderson died a few days later at age 47, leaving behind a wife and ten children.
Two of Anderson’s grandchildren and two of his great-grandchildren were at Saturday’s 100-year memorial.
