Firm helps 're-purpose' historic school facility

Goodman Acker PC, a personal injury law firm in Southfield, has joined forces with Life Remodeled to support upgrades to the historic Durfee School building in Detroit.

Life Remodeled, a nonprofit organization, invests approximately $5 million in cash, labor, and materials into one Detroit neighborhood each year. This year’s project involves renovating and re-purposing the former Durfee School into a Community Innovation Center. The Center will focus on entrepreneurship, employment, education, and community activities.

In addition to a financial contribution, Goodman Acker will bolster its support for the project with participation in the Grand Opening event being held on April 27 and an office-wide Volunteer Day on May 18.

The April 27 grand opening will take place from 3-5 p.m. at 2470 Collingwood Street, Detroit. The event will include an open house with games and tours for local students and community residents. Goodman Acker representatives will be at the grand opening, giving out items such as children’s coloring books, business card holders, and more to those who attend.

The May 18 Goodman Acker Volunteer Day will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Durfee Community Innovation Center. The firm’s entire staff will be lending their hands to do on-site work, including outdoor beautification and gardening, painting, and organizing classroom spaces.

“We are proud to partner with Life Remodeled to help transform the Durfee School into a Community Innovation Center,” said Jordan Acker, partner at Goodman Acker and director of Business Development. “Durfee School means a lot to my family – my grandfather graduated from there, and my grandmother graduated from Center High School next door. Revitalizing the neighborhood with a building that builds a future for this neighborhood is something that all of us at Goodman Acker are extremely proud to participate in.”
