Event to help educate legal professionals on strangulation cases

HAVEN, Oakland County's comprehensive program for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, in partnership with the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention, will host a free professional conference on strangulation in domestic violence.

Strangulation is one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and sexual assault, with death occurring within minutes. When perpetrators strangle their victims, it is a felony and indicator of potential future homicide.

The conference is intended for healthcare workers, first responders, and criminal justice and legal professionals. Those who will benefit include judges, lawyers, court advocates, social workers, probation officers, physicians, nurses, paramedics, law enforcement, and others who encounter domestic violence survivors in their line of work. The conference will include presentations from national experts on the identification, investigation, documentation and prosecution of strangulation cases.

The conference will take place Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 6, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Rd. in Troy

Registration for the free conference is available at www.haven-oakland.org.

The conference is presented by HAVEN and The Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention and made possible by community sponsorships from: Beaumont Hospital, Faith Trinity Church, Menzies Foundation, Sheriff Michael Bouchard and Deputies for Kids, Oakland County commissioners, and Oakland University.
