Latin American food, drink startup wins Detroit contest

DETROIT (AP) - A Latin American food and cocktail startup has been awarded $50,000 in a competition to reward entrepreneurs in Detroit.

Toma Detroit recently won the 2018 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest. It comes with the prize money from Comerica Bank as well as $200,000 in pro bono services, including branding and design, social media advertising, architectural renderings and legal guidance.

Toma Detroit plans to open a tequila and mezcal tasting room in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. The venture says it uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients for its food and drinks.

The contest started in 2011. Hatch Detroit is a Michigan nonprofit designed to support independent, retail businesses in Detroit and the enclaves of Highland Park and Hamtramck.
