Senators announce more than $700,000 in support for fire departments in southeast Michigan

U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters last Friday announced $773,045 for fire departments in 9 communities across Southeast Michigan to purchase new equipment and improve services. These grants include $102,254 for the Chartered Township of Northville, $90,476 for the North Oakland County Fire Authority, $47,619 for the City of Mount Clemens, $56,727 for the City of Allen Park, $46,000 for the Armada Fire Department, $59,090 for City of Garden City, $120,256 for the City of Sterling Heights, $69,943 for the City of Ypsilanti, and $180,680 for the City of Birmingham. These grants come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants program.

“Our firefighters in Southeast Michigan put their lives on the line to protect our families, homes, and communities,” said Stabenow. “These new resources will provide critical training and give our first responders the equipment they need to better serve the public and do their jobs safely and effectively.”

“Now more than ever, our firefighters and first responders are doing all they can to ensure our communities are safe places to call home during this difficult time,” said Peters. “This funding will help ensure departments across Southeast Michigan will be better equipped to do their jobs efficiently and safely when emergencies arise.”

Eligible fire departments and Emergency Medical Services organizations in Michigan and across the country can apply for Assistance to Firefighters Grants. These competitive grants help first responders purchase the equipment and obtain the training needed to handle fire-related hazards.
