News (AP) - Center offers trainings on peacefully resolving conflict

The Oakland Mediation Center will be offering several trainings on a variety of topics for Professional Development this fall.

Managers devote on average 25% to 40% of their time to managing workplace conflicts, a priority that consumes up to 1-2 days of their work week. The "Helping Employees Work Together" workshop puts the tools of the professional mediator into the hands of managers responsible for the cooperative work of others. Managers will learn "managerial mediation" to help employees work together, negotiate productive work relations and resolve workplace conflict early to prevent escalation and reoccurrence of conflict. The training will take place on Monday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course fee is $325 per trainee.

The 40-Hour General Civil Mediator Training is designed to teach participants the skills necessary to act as mediators facilitating the resolution of civil cases. This training is scheduled for Sept. 17 and 24 and Oct. 1, 8, and 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The course fee $995 per trainee.

The 40-Hour Divorce and Custody Mediator Training is designed to teach participants the skills necessary to act as mediators facilitating the resolution of divorce cases. This training is scheduled for Oct. 5, 12, 19, 26 and Nov. 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course fee is $1,450 per trainee.

Both trainings are approved by the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) as the first step for any individual who wishes to mediate privately or qualify for the circuit court approved list of mediators. Each workshop is also eligible for the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) funding and is listed on the Career Education Consumer Report (CECR). Practical experience packages are available to individuals interested in obtaining hours of experience or applying for the circuit court list of mediators.

The Conflict Management in Special Education workshop is designed to impart skills that help the IEP team effectively manage conflict prior to, during, and after IEP meetings.

The training will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 1 to 5 p.m. The course fee is $59 per trainee.
