Former Ann Arbor detective goes for laughs

Khurum Sheikh, a former lieutenant detective with the Ann Arbor Police Department who retired in 2009 and turned to a life of comedy, was one of three stars who performed in a free Veteran’s Day comedy show Nov. 11, at the Michigan Theatre in Jackson.

Touring the community, Sheikh does stand-up comedy based on not only his experience as a police officer but his on unique perspective of being originally from Pakistan in the era of the war on terrorism.
Sheikh was joined by two other national touring comedians:  Steve Smargon, aka the “Bipolar Marine,” whose wacky comedic style on any given night all depends on whether he took his meds or a handful of Skittles; and Andy Beningom a regular on the “Bob & Tom Show” who centers his energetic act around growing up as a middle child and his short-lived career as a middle school teacher.
