Former WCBA president appointed to Board of Regents at EMU by governor

Gov. Jennifer Granholm has appointed former WCBA President Erane Washington-Kendrick to the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents.

Her term begins January 1, 2011.

Washington-Kendrick is the founder of the Law Firm of Erane C. Washington-Kendrick, PLLC, an Ann Arbor-based firm that represents individuals and businesses in a variety of legal areas including estate, business, securities and complex litigation.

She also is a partner with the Julington Litigation Center.

Washington-Kendrick, and another appointeee Michael Hawks, will fill seats held by two current Regents, Gary Hawks and Philip Incarnati, whose terms are complete at the end of the year.

In announcing the appointments, Governor Granholm said, "Mike Hawks and Erane Washington-Kendrick are leaders in their communities who are committed to higher education and Eastern Michigan University.

"I am pleased to appoint them to the EMU Board of Control and am confident that they will help govern the university with thoughtfulness, integrity and transparency."

"I am elated and honored to be appointed to the EMU Board of Regents," said Washington-Kendrick. "It is a great opportunity to serve our local community in a new capacity and to add my first-generation college graduate perspective to a Board that serves such a diverse student population. It will be a privilege to participate in the governance of such a wonderful institution."

Before opening her firm, Washington-Kendrick served for six years as judicial attorney/assistant to Judge Donald Shelton, Washtenaw Circuit Court. She also served seven years as assistant public defender for Washtenaw County.

She is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the James Madison College at Michigan State University. She currently serves as vice-chair of the Michigan Board of State Canvassers and as a member of the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly.

She lives in Ypsilanti.

The Board of Regents is the governing body of Eastern Michigan University and comprises eight regents who are appointed to eight-year terms by the governor.

The current Regents are Roy Wilbanks, chair; Floyd Clack; Gary D. Hawks; Philip A. Incarnati; Mohamed Okdie; Francine Parker, vice chair; Thomas W. Sidlik; and, James F. Stapleton.
