State Police director retiring

Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Peter C. Munoz has announced his retirement from the MSP effective May 23, 2010.

Munoz, who is the 16th director of the MSP, was appointed to his cabinet-level position by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm on June 10, 2006.

The MSP is a full service law enforcement organization with approximately 2,600 enlisted and civilian employees. The agency includes three bureaus: the Field Services Bureau, State Services Bureau and Administrative Services Bureau.

Munoz has accepted an appointment by President Obama to serve as United States Marshal for the Western District of Michigan.

In his 31 years with the department, Munoz has held the ranks of trooper, sergeant, first lieutenant, inspector, captain, lieutenant colonel and colonel.

Munoz has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Detroit. He is a graduate of the 187th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy (FBINA) and Session XXX of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Executive Institute (NEI Session XXX) in Quantico, Va.

A native of Detroit, Munoz resides in Okemos with his wife, Julia. He is a father of three children.
