WCBA on schedule with Avalon gardening program May 23, 27, June 1

The WCBA's Avalon Gardening public service event is still underway.

Avalon Housing has two primary gardening and landscaping programs with which the WCBA is assisting.

2010 WCBA Volunteer Dates

Here are the dates we have assigned for 2010. In the event of significantly bad weather (we'll still meet if it's just grey with a little drizzle!), we will postpone until one of the rain dates.

Sunday, May 23, 2 p.m.: Arbordale Apartments (at the corner of Arbordale and Pauline) and Parkhurst Apartments (1500 Pauline) 48103. There should be street parking on Arbordale, right opposite the apartments. 1500 Pauline is less than a block away.

Thursday, May 27, 5:30 p.m.: Stimson Apartments, at the corner of Stimson and South Industrial. It maps well using the address 1613 White Street (which runs along one edge of the apartments). Should be street parking on White Street.

Tuesday, June 1, 5:30 p.m.: 201 W. William 48104 (there should be street parking on William, and there may be space for one or two cars in the small lot behind the house).

Gardening with Grace brings flower gardens, both annual and perennial, to each of the Avalon properties.

Working with master gardener Grace Shackman, groups of volunteers work with tenants to plant and tend gardens that tenants and neighbors alike enjoy.

Edible Avalon is currently comprised of six community vegetable gardens located on site at various Avalon locations. Tenants have assigned plots, and with the help of volunteers produced an impressive 1,000 pounds of organic produce in 2009.

This year, they hope to expand the program and will be constructing additional gardening beds at more Avalon locations.

"What if I want to help, but can't even keep a houseplant alive?!

"We welcome all volunteers! We do have experienced gardeners working with all the volunteer groups, so there is someone there to answer questions and direct the work.

"There is always a variety of work during our gardening sessions, anything ranging from new raised bed construction to light weeding and planting. We are happy to accommodate volunteers of a wide range of skills, experience and ability.

"We do ask that any children under 16 are accompanied by a parent or guardian."
