New jail in-take unit requires procedural changes

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has announced that it opened its new In-Take and Release (ITR) unit on Tuesday, August 17.

The unit is a part of the new county jail and district court facility on Hogback Road recently opened.

The opening of the new facility will result in physical and operational changes that will impact the local legal community, County Sheriff Jerry Clayton said.

These changes and new procedures will include, but are not limited to:

* The "interview" rooms in the area currently located in the booking area will need to be closed on a temporary basis due to construction in that area;

* All persons requiring a "professional" visit will need to utilize space in the new ITR. Limited parking for professional visitors will be available by utilizing the "Police Only" entrance off of Hogback. Parking will be very limited in this area, and use of this lot may change in the future;

* Professional visitors must utilize the sidewalk that leads to a new "Public/Bond" entrance, and the intercom may be utilized to gain entrance into the building. Correctional staff will meet the professional visitor and validate proper identification and additional screening;

* Professional visitors will be offered an opportunity to utilize a "non-contact" booth to meet with an inmate. As this area is adjacent to a public hallway, and a partition separates the visitor from the inmate, no additional screening will be required after identification. In addition, professional visitors using the booths will have free egress upon conclusion of their business;

* Limited space is available for those who need to conduct a professional visit in a "contact" setting. Additional screening and control of movement (including egress) applies.

"While the new ITR will result in greater efficiency and safety, we understand that changes and new procedures can result in temporary confusion.

"In order to facilitate an orderly transition to the use of the new ITR, we organized tours of the new facility on Aug. 12 and Aug. 13 which covered the new procedures and changes."
