Land receives MPAS Advocacy Award

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has been honored by Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service (MPAS) for her support of the state's disability community.

Land was presented with the Marvin E. Beekman Advocacy Award at a meeting of the MPAS Board of Directors in Lansing.

The award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to rights protection and advocacy for people with disabilities, according to MPAS.

During Land's two terms, the department upgraded its branch offices, in many cases making the facilities more accessible to visitors with disabilities.

The Bureau of Elections increased the accessibility of polling places with federal grant money in the ''Improving Access for All'' program.
