There were some triumphant lawyers at Fifth Third Ballpark June 11, as the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan's team beat the judges team 5-1 at their annual charity softball game, breaking a six-year winning streak for the judges.

Another winner of the day was the YWCA West Central Michigan, who has been the beneficiary of the game since its beginning in 1983. The game has raised nearly $300,000 over the years for the YW’s programs serving victims of domestic and sexual violence. Over $20,000 was raised this year, with more than $18,000 coming in the form of corporate sponsorships (a high for the game).

Golden Glove awards were presented to Christina MacDonald (Dickinson Wright) of the lawyers team and Judge Margaret Bakker (48th Circuit Court, Allegan County). Both have been long-time supporters of the game.

Capping the day's festivities was the Annual Charity Chow-Down brat eating contest to raise additional funds for the YWCA. Two relay teams from Kent County and Ottawa County law enforcement vied with one another to see who could get down the most dogs. Ottawa County emerged victorious, though all competitors felt a bit sick afterward.

Women Lawyers team members included Liz Balck (injured), Nikki Canute, Lindsay Canan, Kelly Clum-Matthysse, Tracey Cordes, Meg Hackett, Tessa Hessmiller, Ingrid Jensen, Jessica Kuypers, Heidi Lyon, Audra McClure, Christy McDonald, Laura Morris, Nicole Paterson, Emily Rysberg, Elaine Sterrett-Isely, Stacy VanDyken and coach Vicki Seidl. Judges included T.J. Ackert, Margaret Bakker, Mike Buck, Mike Distel, Bill Doherty, Jennifer Faber, Kathleen Feeney, Jim Fisher, Phil Green, Tim Hicks, Jeff Hughes, Jon Hulsing, Bill Kelly, Jane Markey, Jeff O’Hara, Jay Quist, Kimberly Schaefer, and coach Sara Smolenski.
