Judge on state’s top court returning after mental health care
LANSING (AP) — A Michigan Supreme Court justice says he’s returning to in-person work after a month away to seek treatment for depression.
Richard Bernstein, who is blind, has been a justice since 2015 and was re-elected last November to an eight-year term.
“It is my sincere hope that by talking about these issues in the open, free from any needless stigma, we can move closer to a day when anyone struggling can avail themselves of the same quality care I was blessed to receive,” Bernstein said in a statement.
He announced on April 18 that he was seeking care outside Michigan. Bernstein said Tuesday that he was treated for ‘situational depression,”
which can develop due to a series of events.
Bernstein did not participate when the Supreme Court heard cases on April 26 and May 10.
Bernstein comes from a well-known family in Michigan’s legal community, name recognition that helped get him elected in 2014. The Sam
Bernstein law firm is a major TV advertiser in the Detroit area.
State Bar presents Pipeline Summit
The State Bar of Michigan will present the 2023 Pipeline Summit on Thursday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Delta Hotels by Marriott Detroit Novi in Farmington Hills.

FBA to host annual dinner June 7
The Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, will host its annual dinner on Wednesday, June 7, beginning at 5:15 p.m. in the International Banquet and Conference Center at the Atheneum Hotel in Detroit.
The program will include presentation of the 2023 Julian Abele Cook Jr. - Bernard A. Friedman Civility Award, recognition of members of the federal bench, election of chapter officers, live music and social time with friends and colleagues.
Cost is $89 for FBA members, $60 for federal law clerks and law students, and $121 for all non-members.
