Michigan Chronicle to honor Legal Aid and Defender’s Weir

The Michigan Chronicle has named Deierdre L. Weir, president and chief executive officer of Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD), one of its 2010 Women of Excellence.

“Our 2010 honorees have demonstrated exceptional courage, unwavering conviction, and extraordinary grace in achieving notable success within their careers and community service efforts,” the newspaper said.

The newspaper will recognize the 53 honorees at its annual Women of Excellence High Tea on Feb. 19 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward Ave.  For reservations and further information, call (313) 963-8100.
 

Bowling challenge between new lawyers and OCBA board March 5 

Thunderbird Lanes in Troy will be the site of the fifth annual bowling challenge pitting the New Lawyers Committee and the Oakland County Bar Association Board of Directors on Friday, March 5.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a portion of the proceeds designated for the NLC’s charity of choice, the Oak Park Business and Education Alliance. The OCBA Board prevailed in last year’s challenge and revenge is on the mind of the New Lawyers, according to Chair Maureen McGinnis.

The cost is $25 per person, $10 of which will benefit the Oak Park Business and Education Alliance. Thunderbird Lanes is located at 400 W. Maple, Troy.
 

Straker Bar presents 2010 Lawyer’s Toolkit, March 18

The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association will conduct the 2010 Lawyer’s Toolkit during its March membership meeting on Thursday, March 18, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Suite 1751 of the Bingham Office Center, 30800 Telegraph Road in Bingham Farms.

Straker is providing a folder full of new materials to supplement a practice. The meeting will provide guidance and tips for new and experienced attorneys. There will also be a drawing for a free “Basic Practice Handbook” from ICLE. Presenting at the program will be Erica Bell, New Lawyer’s Toolkit; Erika Akinyemi, Solo Practitioner Tips; and Martha Moore, Avoiding Ethical Pitfalls. Materials will be provided.
