Cooley Law School to Celebrate Constitution Day on all 4 campuses
Cooley Law School will celebrate Constitution Day and Patriots Week this month at all four campuses. All events are free and open to the public.
In Auburn Hills, the law school, along with the Oakland County Bar Association Board of Directors and Diversity Committee present a panel discussion, “Judging America: Have We Fulfilled Our Promise of Equality,” on Monday, Sept. 13 in the law school building at 2630 Featherstone, Auburn Hills. Panelists include Michigan Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan and Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Christopher M. Murray, The event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m., followed by the discussion 5:30-6:30 p.m.
In Grand Rapids, Professor Devin Schindler will present “Hot Dogs, Apple Pie & the U.S. Constitution” on Thursday, Sept. 16, noon in the student lounge of the law school building at 111 Commerce Ave., SW, Grand Rapids. The presentation is an informal discussion of this term’s significant Supreme Court constitutional law cases.
In Ann Arbor, on Friday, Sept, 17, the law school will host a presentation, “Consequences of the Developing National Surveillance State: Where Were You on April 3? (The Government Says It Knows),” 1-2:30 p.m., in the library of the school, 3475 Plymouth Road, Ann Arbor. Participants include Cooley professors Daniel Ray and Brendan Beery, and Dr. Linda Kinczkowski from Eastern Michigan University.
In Lansing, Professor William Wagner presents “The American Constitution and Character of a Nation” on Monday, Sept. 20, 12:15-2 p.m. in Room 401 of the Cooley Center, 300 S. Capitol. In this presentation Prof. Wagner provides an introduction to American constitutional law and governance.
Forum to take a look at financial reform
Area investment advisors, registered representatives, and trust officers are invited to join the law firm of Miller Canfield at an upcoming Before the Bell Breakfast Forum on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham.
This month’s discussion will center around financial reform:
—The changing forum of securities disputes, discussed by Miller Canfield lawyers Matthew Allen and Jeffrey Rogg, will include the SEC’s potential new rule bringing retail securities disputes back to court instead of FINRA arbitration, and what that may mean for securities broker dealers and their registered representatives.
—Fiduciary duty update: effect of the Dodd-Frank Act, presented by Miller Canfield lawyer Thomas Cox.
—Update of the Continuing Disclosure rules relating to tax-exempt debt obligations, presented by Miller Canfield lawyer Jerry Rupley.
