State Supreme Court conservatives knock Davis in bad ankle case
DETROIT (AP) — New Michigan Supreme Court Justice Alton Davis is taking heat from his conservative colleagues in the case of a man who broke his ankle along the Detroit River.

Justices Stephen Markman and Maura Corrigan say Davis signed onto an “illogical and awkward” interpretation of state law in February when he was on the appeals court.

Davis cleared the way for an injured man to sue Detroit over a walkway along the Detroit River. The city asked the Supreme Court to look at the case, but justices deadlocked 3-3 Friday so the earlier decision stands.

The court’s Democratic justices did not want to reopen the case. Davis disqualified himself.

He was recently appointed to the Supreme Court and is seeking an eight-year term in the fall election.

Ex-judge Waterstone faces key probable cause hearing this week
DETROIT (AP) — After a series of appeals, a key court hearing started this week in the case of a former Wayne County judge charged with allowing perjured testimony at a drug trial.

Mary Waterstone is charged with four felonies. Former prosecutor Karen Plants and two suburban Detroit police officers are also charged.

A judge in Detroit’s 36th District Court must decide whether there’s probable cause to send the four to trial. The hearing started Monday and could last the entire week.

Waterstone has said she allowed police to lie at a 2005 trial to protect the safety of a paid informant.

Alexander Aceval’s cocaine trial ended in a mistrial, but he later accepted a plea deal and was sent to prison.
