AG Schuette asking Supreme Court to reconsider some cases
LANSING (AP) — Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette says he wants the new conservative majority on the Michigan Supreme Court to reconsider some decisions made late last year when the court had a liberal majority.
One late December decision would let people sue the state if they claim permits for certain projects would harm the environment. Schuette said in a statement he’ll argue the case is moot and that the existing permit appeals process is the proper forum to address citizen concerns.
Another case Schuette says he wants reconsidered involves the Michigan Education Association. The court ruled in late December that it’s legal for school districts to deduct political action committee contributions from employee paychecks.
Schuette says he also wants the court to revisit two other decisions made last month.

Cooley Law School Criminal Law Society will present, on Thursday, Jan. 20, “Investigation and Prosecution of Public Corruption Cases” with R. Michael Bullotta and Mark Chutkow, Assistant U.S. Attorneys involved in the prosecution of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on RICO violations. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held 1-2 p.m. in Room L-48 of the law school’s Auburn Hills, Mich., campus at 2630 Featherstone Road. Refreshments will follow. Program for Int’l Legal Studies Speaker Series
The Winter/Spring 2011 Speaker Series: “U.S. ratification of the women’s rights treaty: fabulous, horrendous or meaningless?” with Julia Ernst, visiting associate professor at Georgetown University Law Center. The event will take place in the Law School’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at 12:15-1:30 p.m. on the dates noted above. They are free and open to the public and lunch will be served. ABJM to conduct annual worship service at Little Rock Baptist
The Association of Black Judges of Michigan’s (ABJM) Annual Worship Service will be conducted on Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Little Rock Baptist Church in Detroit located at 9000 Woodward.
