Attorney named to Summer in the City board of directors
Kathryn A. Katz, an attorney in Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP’s Trusts and Estates Department, has been named to the Summer in the City Board of Directors. Summer in the City is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring a diverse group of young people to Detroit neighborhoods to participate in painting, gardening and youth enrichment programs.
At Honigman, Katz counsels individuals on various aspects of estate and wealth transfer planning, including the preparation of wills and trusts, and the formation and operation of private foundations and public charities.
Katz earned a J.D., with honors, from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a B.A. in History and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin.
Birmingham attorney H. Joel Newman forms new law practice
Birmingham attorney H. Joel Newman has formed a new law firm that specializes in complex litigation and trials, including commercial litigation, shareholder and partnership disputes, attorney malpractice and stockbroker fraud. Newman was a founding shareholder of Hyman Lippitt, PC. He will remain in the former Hyman Lippitt office suite at 322 North Old Woodward in Birmingham.
During his career, Newman has successfully litigated several of the largest shareholder and partnership disputes in Michigan, at least two of which involved more than $1 billion in disputed assets. He has obtained numerous multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for his clients. Newman defended a “big three” automobile manufacturer in a major case brought by two of the largest motor home manufacturers seeking eight figure damages. He obtained dismissal of more than 90 percent of the claims and settled the remainder for nuisance value. Newman also represents local and national clients in connection with rezoning matters, as well as numerous employment, business fraud, and attorney malpractice cases.
“At this point in my career, I am grateful that I now have the ability to focus my work solely on trials and litigation and less on management,” said Newman. “I also am equally as pleased that I have the resources to continuing work with many of the same, great attorneys.”
Newman received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and earned an undergraduate degree from Wayne State University, graduating with highest distinction and being elected Phi Beta Kappa. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan (Masters, Business Law, Litigation and Real Estate Property Sections), the American Constitution Society, and the Oakland County Bar Association.
