Wayne County Friend of the Court offers bench warrant amnesty
Wayne County Friend of the Court is offering amnesty on bench warrants for those in arrears on child support. From May 1 – 24, payers who appear and pay 1 percent or $250, whichever is greater, toward their child support arrearage will receive amnesty.
Qualified payers will not be arrested, but the court does not guarantee that warrants not related to child support would not be enforced. The program does not eliminate the amount of child support you owe and does not affect current payments. It also does not eliminate any surcharges or fees. The Friend of the Court can only resolve your Wayne County child support warrant.
You must appear in person at the Wayne County Friend of the Court on the second floor of the Penobscot Building, 645 Griswold in downtown Detroit and bring photo identifications and income information. The hours for the program are 8 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. from Wednesday, May 1, through Friday, May 24, with extended hours until 5:45 p.m. from Friday, May 17, through Thursday, May 23.
You must bring $250 or 1 percent of your arrearage, whichever is greater, in cash or money order to qualify for this program.
More amnesty information is available online at www.3rdcc.org and Friend of the Court account information can be found at www.micase.com. The site can also tell you the status of your account. Service representatives will also be available at the Friend of the Court Call Center at 313-224-5300.

Miller Canfield supports free tax assistance for struggling families
Financially struggling families in southeast Michigan are getting free help with their income taxes, thanks to a continued relationship between Miller Canfield and Accounting Aid Society.
Accounting Aid Society (AAS) is the largest provider of free tax services in Michigan. To fulfill its mission, the nonprofit organization depends on more than 500 volunteers each year, and contributions from businesses, government agencies and foundations to its operating fund.
“Miller Canfield has a long history of supporting local communities by providing pro bono services,” said Thomas W. Linn, chairman emeritus at Miller Canfield and chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. “We have been AAS tax volunteers for several tax seasons – last year volunteering hundreds of hours – and the firm is a regular contributor to the agency’s annual fund.”
Miller Canfield was named in the 2012 Pro Bono Circle of Excellence by the State Bar of Michigan for exceeding the State Bar’s voluntary standards for pro bono activities.
In 2012, AAS served 20,736 families and helped them receive $23.5 million in refunds and credits, thanks to 579 volunteers. For more information about Accounting Aid Society and its year-round tax program, call 866-673-0873 toll-free or click on www.accountingaidsociety.org.
