Firm pledges 500 hours of legal services to economic program
Bowman and Brooke announce this week that lawyers in its Detroit office have pledged to provide 500 hours of legal services in 2013 to Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC), a public-private initiative which connects Michigan companies with opportunities to help them grow and expand. PMBC was developed by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
“Our firm is committed to giving back to the communities in which our lawyers live and work, and we could not be more proud to partner with PMBC,” said Lawrence Mann, managing partner of the firm’s Detroit office.
Miller Canfield to host discussion on Friend of the Court briefs May 9
Join former Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court and Miller Canfield lawyer, Clifford Taylor, along with appellate practitioners Matthew Leitman and Paul Hudson for “Using Friend of the Court Briefs to Protect Your Organization,” Thursday, May 9, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., from 7:30-8:30 a.m.
The presenters will offer a unique perspective on how to use amicus briefs to protect your business or organization’s interests and explain how these briefs differ from those of the parties to the case, how they can be used to persuade the court to hear a case, and the types of cases in which amicus briefs can be most persuasive.
“It’s important for Michigan businesses and organizations to know that there are cases affecting their interests every term in the Michigan courts — and that they have an opportunity to have their voices heard in those cases even where they are not parties in a case,” said Hudson.

Kornfield presents at MIPLA meeting in Troy
Bodman attorney Susan M. Kornfield presented “What you missed in the rest of the IP World when you were stressing out over the AIA” to the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) at the organization’s monthly meeting held at the Somerset Inn in Troy on April 16.
Kornfield, of Bodman’s Ann Arbor office, is a nationally recognized speaker and expert on intellectual property law. She serves on an advisory committee to Stanford University on matters involving libraries and academic information resources and lectures at universities, legal conferences, and business workshops on intellectual property issues. She has been selected as an expert witness, mediator, and arbitrator in intellectual property disputes.
Kornfield is listed in The Best Lawyers in America 2013 under Copyright Law, Litigation-Intellectual Property, Technology Law, and Trademark Law. She is listed in Michigan Super Lawyers 2007 as one of the top 50 women attorneys in Michigan and listed in Michigan Super Lawyers 2007-2012 under Intellectual Property.
