Michigan lawmakers representing Wayne County districts attended the first annual “3rd Circuit Court Legislative Day” on Friday, May 10, and had an opportunity to view firsthand the operations of the court.

“There are many issues confronting the legislative and judicial branches of government,” said 3rd Circuit Court Judge Kathleen McCarthy, one of the event organizers. “The Wayne County Circuit Court is aware that oftentimes there is a lack of understanding of our court system. Therefore, we invited all Wayne County legislators to attend our first annual Legislative Day to give them an overview of the court's operations, an opportunity to visit the courtrooms in our family, civil, juvenile, and criminal divisions, and an opportunity to meet with judges and staff to discuss issues impacting their legislative decisions.”

The lawmakers visited courtrooms in family, civil, juvenile and criminal divisions, including:

• Friend of the Court at the Penobscot Building

• Civil Division at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center

• Lincoln Hall of Justice for juveniles

• Criminal Division at Frank Murphy Hall of Justice

They also had an opportunity to meet with judges and staff to discuss issues affecting legislative decisions.
