Garcetti takes over as mayor of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eric Garcetti celebrated the start of his first term as mayor Sunday with a promise to do the basic things right while getting Los Angeles’ economy rolling again.
The 42-year-old Ivy Leaguer, a veteran city councilman and son of a former prosecutor, took a ceremonial oath of office on the City Hall steps as part of inaugural festivities featuring Jimmy Kimmel and the musician Moby.
Officially, he takes over the job leading a sprawling city of nearly 4 million people on Monday.
He replaces fellow Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa, 60, who exits after two uneven terms during which he expanded rail lines in a city notoriously choked by cars and pushed to improve a school district over which the mayor has no direct control.
Garcetti sketched an agenda that included cultivating ideas with business executives and universities, stopping the flight of Hollywood productions and reducing red tape and business taxes long seen as discouraging job growth.
“You’ll have a local government that’s off your back and on your side,” he promised.

Cirque du Soleil artist dies after fall in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Paris-born performer in Cirque du Soleil’s “Ka” died after a fall during a show in Las Vegas.
Sarah Guyard-Guillot was pronounced dead late Saturday night at a hospital after falling about 50 feet from the show’s stage.
Witnesses told the Las Vegas Sun that the accident occurred near the end of the production Saturday night at the MGM Grand.
Visitor Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Springs, Colo., said the 31-year-old acrobatic performer was being hoisted up the side of the stage when it appeared that she slipped free of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below the stage.
The show momentarily continued, then stopped. Minutes after the accident, a recorded announcement informed audience members that refunds or vouchers to future shows would be offered, and the crowd was dismissed.
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte issued a statement Sunday praising Guyard-Guillot and saying performances of “Ka” have been canceled until further notice.
Guyard-Guillot, a mother of two children, had been with the original cast of “Ka” since 2006, and had been an acrobatic performer for over 20 years

Rescuers bring body down from Mt. Hood glacier

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Searchers carried a body down Mount Hood Sunday from the glacier where it was spotted by a helicopter crew looking for a missing climber.
The recovery team set out around 3 a.m. Sunday and reached the body around 11 a.m., said Sgt. Dan Kraus of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s office.
He expected the mission to take more than 18 hours to complete.
Officials believe the body is likely Kinley Adams, a 59-year-old Salem dentist who failed to return June 22 from a climb on the west side of Oregon’s tallest mountain.
They won’t be able to identify him until the body is transferred to the medical examiner, Kraus said.
The recovery operation included 30 climbers and a few dozen support personnel, nearly all volunteers.
The body had to be pulled down the mountain on a stretcher, through snow, ice and rapidly changing weather.
Because of the weather conditions, avalanche danger and difficult terrain, the searchers were not positive when they set out Sunday morning that they would be able to reach the body or bring it back down, he said.

Helicopter lands in NYC’s Hudson River; all safe

NEW YORK (AP) — A charter helicopter carrying a family of four Swedes on a sightseeing tour of New York City lost power shortly after takeoff Sunday and made an emergency landing on the Hudson River, authorities said. The pilot and occupants were uninjured.
The helicopter landed shortly before noon in the section of the river near 79th Street by the New York City Marina.
Deputy Fire Chief Thomas McKavanaugh said the helicopter had taken off from the Wall Street Heliport and lost power after 12 minutes in the air. The pilot used the craft’s pontoons, and it remained upright as it landed.
The passengers were two adults and two children from Sweden, he said. No one was injured, but the tourists were taken to the hospital for observation, authorities said.
A boater brought the family back to shore, and they were all calm, he said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the helicopter, a Bell 206, is registered to New York Helicopter, which offers sightseeing tours ranging from $139 per person for a 15-minute flight to $295 per person for a 25-minute flight. A call to the company went unanswered.

Cops: Woman is arrested in theft of costly jewelry

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — New York State Police say they’ve arrested a woman wanted for a string of high-end jewelry thefts in Florida and one of the victims was a New York Giants player.
Police said Saturday that Subhanna Beyah was arrested on fugitive from justice charges in Queens. Detectives from the Miami Beach Police Department asked the state police Thursday to help locate Beyah.
Beyah was arraigned early Sunday in Queens on the fugitive warrant. She was in custody and not immediately available for comment.
Police say the 25-year-old was wanted for multiple larcenies where jewelry and cash were taken. Police identified one victim as a Giants player. In March, Giants defensive tackle Shaun Rogers reported $400,000 worth of missing jewelry from a hotel safe in Miami.
A Giants spokesman declined to comment.

Southwest bakes in 115 to 120-degree heat wave

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man died and another was hospitalized in serious condition Saturday afternoon in heat-aggravated incidents as a heat wave blistered this sunbaked city and elsewhere in the Southwest.
Forecasters said temperatures in Las Vegas shot up to 115 degrees on Saturday afternoon, two degrees short of the city’s all-time record.
Phoenix hit 119 degrees by mid-afternoon, breaking the record for June 29 that was set in 1994. And large swaths of California sweltered under extreme heat warnings, which are expected to last into Tuesday night — and maybe even longer.
