Taps Hon. Prentis Edwards, Jr. for chief judge pro tem
Judge Nancy M. Blount has been appointed chief judge of Detroit’s 36th District Court by the Michigan Supreme Court. The new chief judge has named Prentis Edwards, Jr. as the 36th District’s chief judge pro tem.
Judge Michael Talbot, the 36th District’s special judicial administrator, praised the Supreme Court’s appointment of Blount and Blount’s choice of Edwards.
“These are both fine judges, and I look forward to working with them. They each bring unique skills and experiences that will strengthen and sustain the court,” Talbot said.
The Michigan Supreme Court appoints the chief judges of the state’s trial courts, in keeping with Michigan Court Rule 8.110. The court appoints chief judges in the fall of each odd-numbered year.
Chief judges serve two-year terms beginning on January 1 of each even-numbered year and ending December 31 of the second year. Judge Blount was appointed to fill the rest of a chief judge term that ends December 31, 2013.
Blount, who has served as a judge of the 36th District Court since 1983, earned both undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Michigan. She was admitted to both the State Bar of Michigan and the United States District Court Eastern District in 1975 and to the U.S. Court of Appeals, 6th Circuit in 1978. She also served as assistant corporation counsel for the city of Detroit, City of Detroit and as adjunct professor at Wayne State University.
A member of the State Bar of Michigan, Blount is also a member of the Black Judges Association and the Wolverine Bar Association. In addition, she is involved in community activities as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Trade Union Leadership Council; she is a life member of NAACP.
Edwards is a lifelong Detroit resident and a graduate of Renaissance High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business and his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing.
While in law school, Edwards worked as a legislative assistant for the Michigan State House of Representatives in the areas of public policy, constituent relations, and legislative affairs. He also served as an attorney for the Detroit Public Schools, held a public policy position with the Detroit City Council, served as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Wayne County, and handled community relations in Detroit’s 4th District for the Michigan Senate. Edwards became a District Court judge in 2011 and is currently on administrative assignment handling felony preliminary examinations at Third Circuit Court.
Edwards is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, Wolverine Bar Association, NAACP Detroit Branch, and the Charles H. Wright Museum.
