Attorney seeks State Senate seat

Local attorney and businessman Ryan Fishman formally announced his candidacy for the 13th District State Senate seat on Wednesday at a local business in Troy. The 13th District represents Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Clawson, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, and Troy, and the seat will be open in 2014.

“I see public service as a calling, not a career path, and Oakland County needs a leader who is willing to shake up the status quo and put fresh ideas and a vision for the future ahead of party politics and personal interests,” said Fishman. “I am running for State Senate because I am hearing from small businessowners and young professionals on a daily basis that we need energy and innovation in Lansing to help cultivate vibrant communities and a thriving economy.”

Fishman was born in Detroit, grew up in Bloomfield Hills, and today lives in downtown Birmingham. He is the son of a schoolteacher and an attorney, and has his parents’ admiration of the law and an appreciation for education and civic engagement. Fishman graduated from Andover High School in Bloomfield Hills and studied Broadcast Journalism, Middle Eastern Studies and Political Science at Syracuse University in New York.

“Partisan politics has far too often gotten in the way of progress in Lansing and I’m going to go to the Capitol each and every day to put a stop to that and be an advocate for the people of this community,” said Fishman. “I’m confident that if we end these political games and focus on working together instead, we can find the solutions that will get Michigan and our families back on the path to prosperity.”

Fishman worked as a political reporter, news anchor, and talk show host for Clear Channel Communications in New York before returning to Michigan to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a career in law. He attended law school at Wayne State University, receiving his law degree in 2013, and has worked in United States District Court and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, helping to prepare homicide prosecutions. After passing the bar, Fishman joined his father in private practice.

“As a young entrepreneur who has chosen to stay and invest in Michigan, I want a State Senator who shares my commitment to Oakland County and the people who are living, working and raising a family here,” said Trevor George, Founder and CEO of Blue Wheel Media in Troy where Ryan Fishman made his announcement. “I want someone who understands the needs of our community and has the conviction to act on them, from supporting strong schools and culture to creating a pro-business environment. In my line of work, I have enough people telling me why we can’t do something — I want a leader I can count on to make things happen.”
