Snyder appoints Michael Carpenter to 75th District Court

Gov. Rick Snyder on Thursday announced the appointment of Michael Carpenter, of Midland, to the 75th District Court serving Midland County.

“Michael has decades of experience in the legal profession, a great work ethic and is active in the community,” Snyder said. “I am confident he will be an excellent judge for Midland County.”

Carpenter has served as Midland County prosecutor since 2005. Prior to being elected prosecutor he worked as a sole practitioner, where he practiced criminal and family law cases and estate planning. He also was an associate attorney for the Midland-based law firm of Mathieu and Lee, and served as a law clerk for judges Thomas Beale and Thomas Ludington. He started his career as a customer service representative with Dow Chemical.

He is active in his community and serves on numerous boards, including as chairman of Midland County’s project D.A.R.E., the Community Correction Action Board, the Midland County Concealed Weapons License Board, and of the Board of Elders of the Midland Evangelical Free Church.

Carpenter earned his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. He fills a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John Hart and must seek election in November 2014 to serve a two-year term.
