The International Association of Judges honored the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative with its Justice in the World Award. The award, which recognizes people and organizations that work to uphold judicial independence, was presented on Dec. 10 at the Premises of the Presidency of Comunidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain.
Jaime Ignacio González González, president of the Community of Madrid, presented the award to ABA President James R. Silkenat, who accepted it on behalf of the association.
“It is a great honor and privilege for the American Bar Association to receive the illustrious Justice in the World Award. The ABA labors only in the hope that the rule of law everywhere in the world is strengthened and empowered,” Silkenat said. “The chief aim of the ABA Rule of Law Initiative is to help communities build sustainable institutions that deliver justice, foster economic opportunity and ensure respect for human dignity.”
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative is an international development program that promotes the rule of law by working with in-country partners to build sustainable institutions and societies that deliver justice, foster economic opportunity and ensure respect for human dignity. The initiative implements legal reform programs in roughly 60 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East and North Africa.
The International Association of Judges was founded in Salzburg, Austria, in 1953 as a professional, nonpolitical, international organization to bring together national associations of judges. The organization currently represents 80 associations from five continents.
Past recipients of the Justice in the World Award include the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) (2010), the Consultative Council of European Judges (2009) and Leandro Despouy (2008, then-UN special rapporteur on independence of judges and lawyers).
“I am delighted that the Foundation for Justice in the World intends to recognize our work to support judicial independence in this way,” said Stephen N. Zack, chair of the ABA ROLI Board of Directors.
