Scam email pretends to be from the Michigan Court of Appeals
In one reported version if a scan email, the subject line states, “Your complaint received.” The message reads in part, “Letter of acknowledgement. Hereby you are advised that we have received your complaint. Shortly after we receive your complaint confirmation we will initiate a trial.” The recipient is then told to click on a hyperlink to “confirm your complaint.”
Court of Appeals Chief Judge Williams B. Murphy said, “Please be warned: These e-mails are NOT from the Michigan Court of Appeals. This is a scam, possibly designed to load malware or spyware onto the victim’s computer. Do not click on the link.”
Similar scams have been reported in other states. Murphy said that those who receive the scam e-mails should report them to law enforcement and to abuse@michigan.gov.
Race-based preferences in college admissions topic of panel
Cooley Law School’s student chapters of the ACLU and the Federalist Society, along with the Michigan Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society, will host a panel discussion titled, “Twilight of Race-Based Preference in College Admissions?” The event will be moderated by Henry Payne, American editorial cartoonist for the Detroit News. Panelists include Hans von Spakovsky, Heritage Foundation; Jennifer Gratz, XIV Foundation; Trevor W. Coleman, author and speechwriter; and Mark Fancher, ACLU of Michigan. The event will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Cooley Law School’s Lansing campus, 300 S. Capitol Ave., Room 501.?It is free and open to the public.
Investigative reporter to address PALS meeting in Hamtramck
The Polish American Legal Society will host its next general meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. at Polish Village Cafe, 2nd floor, 2990 Yemens Ave. in Hamtramck. The guest speaker will be investigative reporter M.L. Elrick, who received a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Kwame Kilpatrick scandal.
