 Federal Bar offering sessions on ‘Trial Advocacy & Mentoring’

The Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to announce its “Trial Advocacy & Mentoring Program,” designed specifically with “newer” lawyers in mind but open to any attorney seeking hands-on experience in fundamental litigation skills, working in tandem with judges and seasoned attorneys who will offer valuable guidance on direct and cross examination, opening statements and closing arguments.

The 2014 Mentoring Program will focus on a civil case trial from openings through the presentation of witness testimony and concluding with final arguments.  An introductory session on March 27 will be followed by two full-day sessions March 31 and April 1 led by U.S. District Court Judge Mark Goldsmith and federal judges from the Eastern District and held at the Theodore Levin Courthouse.
 
At the Introductory Session, newer lawyers will be grouped into teams and assigned to a team leader.  The case will be introduced and a discussion presented on various aspects of trial practice in the federal courts.  Each participant will be required to meet with their team leader and will be responsible for preparing and presenting/conducting opening and closing statements and direct and cross examinations in front of one of
the federal judges.  Participants will receive individual feedback from the team leaders and judges.

Judge sets June trial on Detroit bankruptcy plan

 
DETROIT (AP) — A judge has set a June 16 trial on Detroit’s plan to emerge from bankruptcy.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes set a series of deadlines Monday. He’s giving creditors until March 28 to file objections to the plan released last week by Detroit emergency manager Kevyn Orr.
Rhodes is encouraging all sides to negotiate with “full intensity and vigor” to resolve any disputes before they land in court.
Under Detroit’s plan, pension holders could expect to get 70 percent to 90 percent of what they are owed, while many banks would receive as little as 20 percent.
 

Legal Aid and Defender to conduct free food stamp screening clinic March 13

 
Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) will conduct a free food stamp screening clinic on Thursday, March 13 from 9-11 a.m. at Focus: HOPE, 1400 Oakman Blvd.
The clinic is designed to identify children and families who are eligible for food stamps but do not receive them or who receive them but are qualified for larger grants. The public is invited to attend the clinic.  To RSVP, call LAD at (313) 967-5652.
