 Bodman attorney joins Dean’s Advisory Board at University Toledo College of Law  

Bodman attorney James J. Carty, of the firm’s Ann Arbor office, has joined the University of Toledo College of Law Dean’s Advisory Board.  

The University of Toledo College of Law Dean’s Advisory Board was formed more than 10 years ago to advise the dean on issues affecting the law school.  The board is comprised of law school alumni from around the country.  
Carty is a member of Bodman’s Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution Practice Group. He represents clients involved in complex commercial litigation matters. Before becoming an attorney, he worked as a print and broadcast journalist. He was most recently a freelance sports correspondent for The New York Times, covering college football and basketball while attending law school. In eight years at the Ann Arbor News, he won or shared in more than two dozen local and national journalism awards. He was one of two lead writers on an investigative project into athletics and academics at the University of Michigan that was an entry for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting.
 
Carty is a graduate of the University of Toledo College of Law. He earned his undergraduate degree at Syracuse University.

In law school, Carty was an associate member and articles editor of the University of Toledo Law Review and a member of the Constitutional Law Team for the University of Toledo Moot Court. He was also a University of Toledo College of Law Presidential Merit Scholar. He served as a judicial intern to the Honorable George Caram Steeh, III of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
 

Wolverine Bar Association panel to discuss Supreme Court decision

On April 22, 2014, in a fractured 6-to-2 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a change to the Michigan Constitution that forbids affirmative action by public colleges in the state. The Wolverine Bar Association is hosting a panel discussion regarding the controversial history of the ballot initiative that led to the amendment to the state constitution, and what should be done in the aftermath of the Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action decision.
 
The panel will feature Jocelyn Benson, Wayne State University Law School Dean, Election Law & Education Law Professor and Founder of the MI Center for Election Law; Mark Bernstein, University of Michigan Regent; Godfrey Dillard, lead attorney for the interveners in the 2003 University of Michigan affirmative action cases; and Rep. Thomas Stallworth, Michigan State Representative and Education Committee Member.

This event will be held 6:15 p.m.-8 p.m. at the University of Michigan Detroit Center, 3663 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. Register by contacting Shanta S.W. McMullan (mcmullan@butzel.com) by noon on Monday, May 11, 2014.
