Starting with the May term, the Thomas M. Cooley Law School Tampa Bay campus will add three professors and the classes necessary for students to fulfill requirements for graduation at the law school, which opened in 2012.
The new faculty members include U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Catherine McEwen of Tampa; Susan Johnson-Velez, the current president of the Hillsborough County Bar Association and a prominent Tampa Bay attorney; and Maureen Milliron, attorney and seasoned law school professor from Naples, Florida.
New courses offered at Cooley include Bankruptcy Law, Advanced Corporate Transactions, Bar Exam Skills, International Law, Military Law, and Advanced Writing Skills. These courses will offer Cooley students all the required courses leading to a Juris Doctor degree.
“Cooley is proud to provide our students a complete course catalog taught by leading law practitioners,” said Jeff Martlew, associate dean at Cooley Law School Tampa Bay. “With the addition of Professors McEwen, Johnson-Velez and Milliron, Cooley continues to offer our students a tremendous depth of knowledge and experience to draw from.”
McEwen, who will teach Bankruptcy Law, has over 20 years of practice experience and has served as U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge of the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division, for nearly 10 years. McEwen earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Florida and her Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law.
Johnson-Velez, who will teach Advanced Writing, joins the faculty with over 20 years of experience representing commercial and individual clients. Her legal expertise lies in dealing with local governments and land use matters, such as codes, permits and zoning. She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and her Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri – Columbia, School of Law.
Milliron has an extensive background in legal instruction as she currently serves as a professor and director of the research, writing and advocacy program for Ave Maria School of Law. She will teach Advanced Writing. Before her 10-year post at Ave Maria, she taught at Wayne State University School of Law, University of Phoenix and Michigan State University College of Law. Milliron earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and Juris Doctor from the Michigan State University College of Law.
Cooley Law School opened its Tampa Bay campus in May 2012 at 9445 Camden Field Parkway, Riverview, Florida. The campus now offers morning, afternoon and evening classes, and has 403 students. Today, Cooley’s Tampa Bay campus employs 16 full-time faculty and 19 full-time staff members, and has a pool of over 20 adjunct faculty members.
